The past 27th and 28th of October, Hammam Alkezmazy, Sustainability Leadership & Innovation Counselor, and Laura García, Communication and engagement manager of ALLCOT, participated and presented a paper on Communication, Capacity-building, and Climate Change; Interlinkages and synergies in the path to Net Zero, during the 3rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CLIMATE CHANGE COMMUNICATION, hosted by the Sevilla University and Complutense University of Madrid.

Objective of the research

The paper aimed to address the connection between communication, capacity-building and climate change, and how the effective use of strategic communication can drive action towards achieving a climate neutral society by 2050

Additionally, this paper highlighted the importance of incorporating an interdisciplinary perspective, where stakeholders, indigenous people, scientists and researchers, policymakers, NGOs, governments, among other parties, act upon climate action and are involved in the process of developing a general framework of communication and engagement.

Structure

In order to explain this, the paper focused on three main points:

  • Introduction of the framework

  • Methodology

  • Results & Conclusion

Framework

  • A climate change and sustainability perspective

  • The Paris Agreement

  • The NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions)

  • The SDGs and its priorities

  • The interconnection between NDC and SDGs

  • The 2030 Agenda

How does this framework work?

Taking into account and implementing all of these science-based facts on communication, engagement and capacity-building strategies could enable sustainable finance to promote sustainability and combat climate change, as well as enhance and foster the climate action needed from all society stakeholders.

ALLCOT Academy

ALLCOT Academy is a great example of using communication and capacity building to make knowledge available to more people. By developing projects, courses, programs, conferences and webinars, publications and awards and competitions a bridge is created to inform and empower people about the social, economical and environmental aspects of sustainable development and climate change, hence promoting a sustainable lifestyle and climate action.

Methodology

The methodology is divided into two main phases:

  • Emphasis on the stakeholder management

By focusing on mapping, analyzing, and engaging, to identify them and their interconnections, what their needs are, their gaps and how they intervene in their field.

  • Design and execute the capacity building programs

This is done on three levels: individual level, community level, and institutional level, which are relevant to those stakeholders.

  • Therefore, effective communication, through the adequate channels, is the vehicle to foster engagement and coordinated action.

Who is involved in this process?

  • Multilateral institutions

  • Policymakers

  • The private sector

  • NGOs and NPOs

  • Academia

  • Indigenous people and local communities (IPLCs)

  • Public

  • Media

Results & Conclusion

The proposed framework showcases a general idea of how to communicate and engage among stakeholders involved in combating climate change. Including different actors and perspectives, and establishing good communication with them can present an opportunity to summon sustainable finance to combat climate change and achieve a climate neutral society by 2050.
